Purely Poultry

oh boo too bad for me! Wisconsin is yet further. I'm in ca. Farthest birds have ever shipped to me was from Chicago but they were already 5-6 weeks old. likely too far to ship day olds. don't you think?

I think Purely Poultry is more of a broker than a hatchery? Your birds may not ship out from Wisconsin. I think My Pet Chicken is the same...they are based in New Jersey, but my order shipped out from Ohio.

Really? Ohio is where I ordered my chicks from this year! wow I could have used them. if they are a broker which hatchery do they use? My Pet Chicken uses Meyer. That's who I ordered from, Meyer. Just curious?

I think they use multiple hatcheries. I saw on PP's website that you could apply to be one of their vendors, which is what made me think of it. They are very vague as to where the birds are coming from...probably to prevent people from ordering directly from the hatchery!

Broker may not be the right word...they probably contract out with multiple different hatcheries to provide their birds in different parts of the country.

Oh I see, thank you. I think I'd kind of like to know where they are coming from. like is it a NPIP hatchery or not. Thats The thing that makes me a bit nervous.

I have ordered from Purely Poultry twice. Once in 2015 and again this year. Last year I picked up my chicks and they were all happy and healthy. They were marked with a washable marker so I could tell the difference by breed. I was very happy with my order. I picked up this year's chicks this morning. Unfortunately 4 of the 29 were dead on arrival. 3 more died on the way home. One isnt doing well right now and 4 are recovering and seem to be getting better. 18 were healthy and happy. I have ordered from Purely Poultry and Murray McMurray and this is the first time I have received dead chicks. I know it happens, but it was a very sad morning for me. I must say the the folks at Purely Poultry have been very friendly and helpful with starting my reimbursement for all chicks that are not "alive and well." One other disappointment was instead of sending "hatchery choice dark brown egg layers" they sent plain "hatchery choice egg layers." I was very excited to get the dark brown egg layers and I was disappointed that the packing list indicated that I didn't get those. I emailed Purely Poultry and they sincerely apologized and will refund the cost of the birds that they incorrectly shipped.

I think the death was probably the Post Office's fault. The chicks were in the standard shipping box with air holes and a divider in the middle. One half had happy healthy chicks, the other side they were all dead or dying. It must have been in a drafty or cold location. Very SAD.

I probably won't order from them again, even though they have been very helpful in the refund process. I may just buy locally rather than having them shipped in the mail from ANY hatchery. It was a pretty sad morning and I definitely do not want to go through this again. Maybe I will just order when the temps don't get as cold overnight. :(

As covered Purely Poultry and MPC are retailers not hatcheries and work with a number of reputable hatcheries to get a variety of breeds and small quantities offered in one spot. If the local retailer that stocks birds hadn't had any this week I would have placed an order with Purely Poultry and dealt with a post office pickup.

If ordering a large quantity it might be better to order hatchery direct but these companies offer we backyard small flock keepers smaller quantities and larger varieties, they let hatchery staff focus on big orders. It is kind of like how Amazon lists things they don't stock, Amazon is still a great place to buy from even though they might not physically handle every product they sell..

They are very prompt and helpful with questions too.

I have heard from smaller hatcheries that they have been having a lot more trouble this year with USPS and dead chicks. My last shipment (not from PP) sat very close to the PO of origin for three days before hopping on a plane to head my direction. Of course the whole box was dead and rotting by the time that I got them as it took 4 days total to get here. Obvious that the box had been mishandled too...one of the dead chicks was stuck to the underside of the top, which says to me that they were upside-down at some point.

My chicks from Purely Poultry (well whatever hatchery they used) arrived yesterday, one dead, but it was an extra chick they put in so not a problem really. The hatchery put grow gel in the box all mixed,so they survived the 2 day trip in this cold well, they are all seem very lively and fighting each other for food, i would use them again. My post office was awesome too, they actually turned up the heat to try to keep em warm and called me before they even opened.
