Purina chick starter very powdery

My bag said Crumbles so I was amazed to open the bag to find 50lbs of powder. Not cost effective to drive 60 miles round trip to return an "opened" bag of feed. So I mix with crumbles and the girls seem to eat it just fine. Of course I'm not happy about the misleading sales tactics from the company to get rid of their low grade feed but that's a lesson learned.....

My Non-medicated feed was less than a month old and powdery. Like Hobbits Mommie said it may have been the end of production run (bottom of the barrel). As long as it's fresh, and dosen't have a strong or moldy smell it's probably Okay to feed. I let my feeders get nearly empty monthly and clean. I use the powder at the bottom of the feeder or bag, by wetting to make a mash. My girls love it.View attachment 1595611. GC
That's a great idea! Just something a little different for them.

One of the reasons I quit buying feed from Tractor Supply is that the mill they use in Turlock, CA has a tendency to pulverize all of their feed, rolled corn, scratch, and pettets too!

The only way I found to use it was to make a mash as suggested earlier in this thread. It was that or take it back. :(

I use the non medicated starter. Bought a bag from ace hardware not out of date but older and it was nearly all powder. Bought two bags from tractor supply and they were a much brighter colored, fresher, more crumbles. I guess maybe the older bag from ace could have been handled a lot more and led to feed turning more to dust. Chicks ate all of it but I think they definitely prefer the crumbles

I feed pellets and avoid crumbles at all costs. I accidentally bought 2 brands of crumbles this year, and both were 50% powder. Dumor at TSC and Purina.
