Purina Layena food OK for 10wk old chicks?

You can use the Purina Flock Raiser and have the oyster shell in a separate dish for the layers. My first 2 chicks that were hatched with a broody hen did just fine.
All the chickens were all living together in the same coop. The Mama hen even had the chicks outside when they were 6 days old.

Everyone is doing just fine.

Another place to check is your local Co Ops they typically carry Chicken feed or can have it ordered. I use custom recipes mixed at a local Co Op I Just pick what i need VS Protien% 28% starter I slowly reduce the amount of protien added by taking out certian grains ect. Remember when the local stores fail everyone everywhere harvest something at a Co Op..

Ok, I have a dumb question so go ahead and laugh....What is a Co Op?

or you could ask me hehe thats what were here for

OK - I'm asking:D

What mix would be proper as a grower that would be OK for the non-layers & layers? Even with the Layer feed, I always give oyster shell free choice. And, I did notice that Purina makes a Flock Raiser, but evidently the one I went to does not sell it since they said that was all they had.

Farmers harvest different crops around the world. Wheat, barley, rye, soybeans, corn, milo, oats, and sesame. thats just a few. Depending on where you live depends on what crop your area grows these are what make most of our feeds we buy over the counter. Those farmers take there crops from there fields to Co Ops in towns there big grain elevators uses in storing grains for international market, or even used as storage bens for some farmers who dont want to sell. It looks to me you have several Co Ops close to you in columbus

You could also try Blue Seal, they have a chick n gamebird grower crumbles and pellets. our little ones love the crumbles. we tried pellets once with them and they didn't like it.

http://www.lionsgrip.com/recipes.html Hope this helps after you find a good % to work with then you can add and take away to customize it to your liking. I also sell custom feed I buy it in 1000 pound lots and sell 50 lbs bags but first let me check with the moderators on selling and advertising since I am a farm. feel free to e mail me I will send a list of detailed recipes to even include or exclude chicken starter with or without medications.layers require aprox 17% while broilers require 22-28% so split the difference and you get aprox 19-21% feed. (this will slow feed to meat conversion in some breeds for example a CxR might take 7-9 weeks to fill out vs 6-8 or so proven on my farm thats might not be in everycase as foilage is different.)

Ditto on this. Mine are between 14-16 weeks old along with my older hens and they get Flock Raiser and you can buy that at TSC!!

Ditto on the Purina Flock Raiser for the chicks. My bantam chicks do great on it. I also keep two tin cans nailed into the coop wall. One's for the grit and the other's for the oyster shell. The hens seem to know when they need it. Since I only have a small flock of the bantams, a 40 or whatever lb. bag of chick starter would be a waste. I'm able to buy as small a bag as 5 lbs. of chick starter at a local feed store. I usually start them on that and when I integrate mama and chicks back into the flock they go on the Flock Raiser. It's worked well for me.

I have six 10wk old chicks that are starting to mix with my 1yr old hens. So far, they are getting along pretty well but no matter how hard I try, the little ones want to eat the layer pellets. My older hens wouldn't eat pellets until they were much older, but these don't seem to mind.

I went to TSC today looking for some grower/breeder pellets thinking I could feed that to the entire flock and offer oyster shell on the side for the hens. They only had it in crumbles which my hens refuse to eat. I explaned my dilemma to a sales person on the floor (who seemed knowledgeable - said he has chickens) and he said the layer pellets would be OK for 10wk old chicks. So, I came home with a bag of Layena pellets.

So what to others on this forum think? Ok or not?
That’s what I’m wondering to do too for my 5 pullets which were born on April 15 2025 and I plan to let them join the others in the beginning of July what if I didn’t let everyone eat the Purina Layena crumble what if they both ate Purina flock raiser crumble until the pullets reach 18 weeks
