Purple comb on leghorn Help!

Chicken comb color can change with temp or mood. Tips being purple just means that they are cold at the ends. On combs that large I'm surprised they have good circulation at all.

Combs are kind of a temp control also. If all else seems good, then just keep an eye on them. if their whole comb starts turning purple in warmer weather and they get droopy looking, then they are feeling bad otherwise it's just temp changes.

Thanks for all of your input. She seems fine and I just realized that she is one of my girls that had an injury on the back of her comb 2 weeks ago. They all look exactly alike, so I was not sure, but today I really examined her and I can still see traces of the bloodstains on her white feathers. I am thinking maybe she is healing, and the circulation is not great there. The other girl's comb has turned red again and has no signs of purple. Go figure. Thanks so much!!

One of my Leghorns got a purple comb a couple weeks ago a few days later she died

My four white leghorn roosters would get purple areas on their combs when they would bite or fight each other and tussle. Now that I have just one rooster his comb has been red with no more purple spots. Yesterday however I noticed he had black crusty things on his comb and I panicked thinking he had some terrible disease. Then I remembered how he rubbed his head side to side against the hardware cloth trying to get away from me when I was trying to catch him. Sometimes it's just nothing.

I hopped over to see how your girls were doing today. I've learned something too in the process. I hope that they will be okay.

So far, everyone is doing great. I still have two girls with a small amount of purple on the backs of their combs. No runny noses or wheezing. I am not going to worry unless I have to, you know? All have good appetites and are active.

Okay, I am no expert I had this problem once and this is something people told me about. Combs turning purple can also mean respiratory problems. I have been told if your coop gets dirty and the urea builds up this can cause, breathing problems. You did say because, of your mother you hadn't cleaned your coop like usual so this could be it. Maybe it happened because, of the build up or maybe when you were cleaning it the urine got stirred up in the air and they were breathing it. I would imagine if this was the problem since you cleaned the coop things probably should get better.

I would just watch them.

I must say I wouldn't think that the temperature would be the problem. It is colder here then where you live and my guys and girls don't have purple combs. Anyway good luck.
