"Purring" pullet

i have a 14 week Australorp staying in a hospital cage at the moment and she's become quite attached to me. She will often try to sit under me, and i will usually end up cuddling and petting her. Until recently though, she was very wary of any people trying to touch her and would screech and run away if you put your hand near her.

I was wondering, when I'm petting her, she makes a strange sound almost like a shrill purring sound. I wanted to know if this was a comfort sound or if me petting her is making her alarmed.
