Hi

Still new to quails. Is it me or do they purr when they are content ,warm and having a stroke ?

Also our male is crowing. But last night he did some wierd ass gurgling noise for like 30 seconds straight. Any ideas ?

My male quail purrs occasionally as well, but in general my quail do not do it often.
When I offered my male quail some watermelon once, he was both very afraid of it and wanted to eat it, so, purring, he took very cautious steps toward it. Finally he reached it, took a tiny piece, retreated quickly, and took a few moments to consider how best to eat it. Then he came back and began pecking at the watermelon normally.

Wish mine could work out how to eat. If I don't chop it up they dont even look at it

The quail alarm call when they freeze in place sounds a bit like a purr. I have seen this mainly used when there is a flying predator about. My Coturnix are generally pretty silent when they are happy or being petted.
Sometimes males make a half-crow that gets garbled. One of my younger males flew out of the brooder and he crowed since he was alone, after three or four crows it seemed like he got tired and started to gurgle his noises. Not sure if it has an official meaning in quail language.

The purr noise will often happen when they see a hawk or something in the sky, or something that they think is dangerous. They will crouch down with their little tails in the air and their heads close to the ground, but their beak pointing up. I've had times when they fly afterwards, so if you have a small area where they could fly over a fence, be prepared for that.

Only my 2nd generation quail consider eating watermelon when I am holding it, and only if I am looking away from them and holding it through the wire of the enclosure rather than opening the door. All my quail are terrified of humans, but the 2nd generation are quicker to learn.

Tidbit...one of my males...would sit on my knee and I swear make a purring noise then sit on my shoulder 😂. We had him inside because another quail tore his head open. Hes fine now. But I swore hed make almost a laughing noise at us when wed yell at him to shush. We had him in a makeshift cage in our livingroom while he healed. Hes still my favorite. I'm even making him his own cage because well...hes my favorite lol. It wouldn't surprise me if they do purr haha
