In my yard it’s the squirrels who alarm first, then the wild birds and quail start immediately. But the quail know it’s safe if they see the dogs, they stop panicking and go about biz as usual because they know the dogs can’t get them. If there’s an alarm from the woods and they don’t see the dogs, the males keep crowing and the females keep hiding. My quail learned to listen to the hundred sparrows around here. Whenever they scream, one quail starts whistling and all go into hiding. It is pretty amazing as they have never seen a sparrow but know the warning tone. The sparrows are never wrong.
