I have noticed that every now and then my girls all sound like they are purring. Once they did it for hours when one of my girls was killed by a hawk and then yesterday they were all doing it and hiding under trees.

I call it a trill and they do it whenever they see something suspicious in the sky like a hawk or airplane, when I trill to my chickens they all tilt their heads towards the sky.
