Put eggs in the bator 9-9-12 anyone want to hatch along????? :0)

Oh, I'm so sorry.

That is the hardest thing, when they get so close but don't quite make it... What kind of chicks were these? As for helping, maybe that would have worked, but do we ever really know for sure? It's so complicated. If I think about it too much, I am just astounded that ANY of them manage to hatch! Well, if you lived close by, I would make you a cup of tea.
Thanks, you are sweet and if you lived closer I would probably take you up on that offer for a cup of tea. It is amazing that any of them make it here. It is crazy that a little baby can be made in such a short amount of time and there are so many things that can and do go wrong. I do wish I had partially zipped for him last night. His head and neck looked really large. HIs neck seemed really long. I am not sure if I had helped him out he would have made it. I do wish I had helped him zip but, I was scared to do that yesterday because it was the night of day18 and I didn't want to rush him and hurt him. He was just to big for that egg though.

I guess I can beat myself up forever over things like this the problem is in the middle of it you just don't know what is the best thing to do help or not help.

I set Tolbunt/ Birchen Marans none of those made it to hatch and some Olive eggers Tolbunt over Birchen Maran/ Black Ameraucana. The one that almost made it was a Olive egger. Unfortunately someone is obviously seriously scrambling these eggs between her house and mine. They all arrive with the air sacs messed up. I tried this once before and only one made it to hatch and then died in its shell the night of the 18th. I was hoping I would be prepared this time and help it out if it made it this far.

Thanks, for the kind words.

So sorry Dandy!

I helped out one last hatch that was really struggling and when it was out it's head and neck were way out of proportion and he died at at less than 24 hours old. It's always so sad to loose a little one. Shipped eggs are so iffy. I hate hatching out shipped eggs, but sometimes to get the breeds you want that's the only option. Good luck next season!
Thanks, Kimbroe. Yea, when I opened this shell this guys neck seemed really long. I have never seen a neck that long on a baby. It was almost as long as my pinky. I wonder if there was something wrong with him. I was busy trying to find a day old baby to buy so he would have company but, I guess I don't have to do that anymore. Your right unfortunately to get the breeds we want we do have to do some shipped eggs. That is why I was hatching these out. I had hatched out about four different breeds about a month ago and this was one of the breeds and none hatched so I was trying again to get some of this breed. It seems not many people have the breeds I want close to me and none are really close enough for me to drive too. I guess I will do shipped eggs until I get all the layer flock I need and then just hatch out my own. I will probably have to do at least one more hatch to get all my layers. Good luck to you too.

What all have you had hatch out so far and how many are left that you are waiting to hatch?

I kept reading that shipped eggs are a hard way to go, but I guess I thought denial and strong will would help me beat the odds. Nope! Still glad I did it, but I think my hatch rate is going to wind up being 40% if I'm even that lucky. I'm happy for the ones that are hatching, though, and I've definitely learned a lot. I'm hoping that by this time next year I'll be hatching eggs from my own birds, with a much higher success rate.
I am not sure but, I have heard 50 percent is pretty standard for shipped eggs. I have done shipped eggs a couple of times before and seems I usually have about and 80 percent. Of course that is not including this hatch and the one before where I tried to hatch out the same eggs. Good luck my fingers are crossed for happy hatching.

Quote: All my eggs have been shipped.
My first shipment was EE and only 2 hatched out of 15.
My second was supposed to be Swedish Flower Hens, but only my 1 Golden Campine hatched out - out of 33 (box was majorly damaged when I got it).
Third was some eggs from a super nice lady that felt bad I had such bad luck out of 15 - 5 hatched (1 died at 24 hours old, 1 died after it got booted out of the heat lamp from the others

).

I was totally done after that. All those were from my LG bator that kept spazzing out on me. We also got evacuated from out house for 1 day during wild fires and I think that's what did most my eggs in from my GC hatch. I was gonna hatch out some more but after I got a new bator in the spring.

Then my GLW went broody so got some SFH from a guy that wants to trade eggs (luckily he doesn't want his eggs until spring). He sent me 5 - 4 hatched!!!

But then the lady that the Campine came from realized she sent me the wrong eggs, she offered to send me a new batch - so of course I HAD to buy a new bator!!! and since it holds 42 eggs and she was only sending me 15 (or 22 is what arrived) I HAD to buy some more eggs - which of course were used as speed bumps for the USPS trucks.

So... After all my chicken drama! My broody has had the best hatch rate. My hatch rate SUCKS! I'm hoping a new bator will help with that.

I know, I ramble, I'm sorry it happens!!!

Here are my two that hatched this morning, another is working on zipping, three of the others have pipped, and the last one hasn't done anything yet.

Got my first set on lock down. there were 10 eggs, 5 were moving, 4 were iffy, 1 was def a quitter early on. I went ahead and left them all in there anyways.

May the waiting game commence! - This is my least favorite game!

I did not have the best hatch. Everyone was very late. I was at a show over the weekend, so I wasn't around to monitor things. 2 silkies were very dried out after fully zipping, but stuck. One died, one is fine with some help. 2 EEs died. 1 in the brooder, 1 after pipping. 2 EEs that were late are having issues with their umbilical area. They haven't come out of the incubator yet. I want them to be alone until the areas dry up a bit. 1 chick due to hatch today hatched yesterday.. Anyway. It was my worst hatch yet. I am not keeping the incubator in the basement any more. Too hard to hold temperatures steady :(

We did get a few really nice silkie chicks with vaulted skulls.
