The chicks love being outside! We rigged up a light to keep them warm and there is a hatch for them to go in and out that we leave open. The coop is secured with hardware cloth, so I feel pretty comfortable with the set up. I have 17 of these babies with 2 3 week old chicks, who probably think I lost my mind when I put them together.

I also put my youngns out before recommended. 3&4 Wks but they really loved it in their coop :) we also rigged up a heat lamp and keep them cooped up at night then open their chicken door during the day. I have 7 bantams and 3 new Hampshire pulluts. I like your set up!

Thanks so much for posting this! We have been giving out chicks playtime in the back yard every day, except for one when the weather wasn't cooperating, since day one! And today they are 2 weeks old and love roaming the yard for hours at a time while I work in the garden or my daughter plays outside! We just moved them into the coop with a lamp, and a little box that they can cuddle up in if they want to. They absolutely love having the run attached to the coop, and having all that space! When I went to check on them just now they were all over in the coop and as soon as I shut the door to prep something, they ran into the run to see what I was doing. Then I shut all the doors, and I have to say, it is pretty toasty in there! Thought that since so many chickens are born outdoors and don't have heat lamps and are fine, these 4 chicks should do just fine with the heat lamp compensating for not having a mother hen for heat. Oh well, it's all good fun!
