Put my broody on SOD?!?

I have actually heard of it before.

Have a book with a picture: The sod is cut to the same size as the bottom of the broody house. It has a bowl scooped out of the soil part to stop the eggs rolling around. (Kinda like a toilet seat

).Your straw nesting material goes on top of the sod. And the whole thing sits neatly inside the broody house.

Suggest you try it and see if you get better results, assuming you have a bit of your lawn you don't mind making large holes in.

And how would you clean it? And after it has sat there for 3 weeks, do you really want your lovely shiny new chickies sitting in that much dry soil?

Good luck..Do tell us how you get on

next time I get a broody, I totally will. I understand how it would hold moisture and heat, but I'd always assumed that the naked chicken parts were enough.. If I end up trying it soon, I'll let you know! I just know that 2 out of 24 eggs is a bad hatch rate.

No kidding!
I think your guy is making excuses. I have only read about sod in relation to broody ducks.
