This is not something I do or want to do. I'm curious how common it is to basically leash a rooster? And what's the purpose?

Can be a cost effective way to enable rooster(s) have more room yet still be confined by the tie which provides as much freedom of movement as a typical run. Method also enables easy rotation of ground a rooster / hen is on so plant community is not overgrazed. The anchors are easy to move. Birds get used to the tie quickly. You must have exceptional predator management for use of ties to be sustainable. Stress on bird is comparable to that imposed by a pen. Birds on tie cords typically have better feathers than than those confined to pens.

I met a lady once who had lost too many chickens to hawks. She had Silkie rooster she tethered with a piece of yarn tied to a rock so he would stay close to the "farm stand store" near and in some shrubs and flowers. He had 2 full size hens to protect and they stayed really close to him. He was used to the arrangement and got the "anchor" whenever she let them out of the pen.

I guess it depends on your purpose and how much protection you offer or he would be a "sitting duck" for predators.

Thank you for the replies! I saw it for the first time the other day and wasn't sure if there was some unknown (to me) reason for doing so. I've only ever seen pictures of them tied to barrel houses. I believe it was a cock fighting thing if I remember right but this was just one lone rooster tied to a pole so I thought maybe other people did it for other reasons.

I could see how this might also work if your hens where being over breed. They could chose when they get serviced by a rooster.
I know it's a dead thread, but this is why I was looking it up. I hate to pen them, but lately they have no manners, whatsoever. So I was considering getting a harness or like leg shackles attached to a rope...but didn't want them to hurt themselves. Also, looking to see if rooster pants were really a thing. I try to keep their spurs dull, but they are still taking feathers. 🤣
