Putting Chicks On Pine Shavings

My chicks are just over a week old. Can I take them off the paper towels and put them on pine shaving or is it too early?

I have had mine on shavings since they were Day old. I do that with all my new chicks and they are all good.

Same here - I used the paper towels for the first day and then removed them and my chicks have been on pine shavings ever since. We grind the shavings ourselves with a mulcher and they are rather large though, so they are too big for baby chicks to try to eat.

I've always use the paper towels just for a day until the babies figure out which is food and which is bedding.

I never use paper towels, we put them right on shavings and have never had a problem with the chicks. Of course when you have a few hundred chicks keeping paper towels in a brooder becomes a hassle.
