Putting eggs in the bator on July 25, does anyone wanna hatch along???

Dandydoodle, poke around the homemade incubator pictures here. It's amazing how easy they are! Although having built my first one, I can't wait to build my second because BOY are there things I'd do differently! Like size. Size is a big one. This one's too small which means (ironically) there's too much temperature variation -- some eggs are practically crammed up against the light bulb. There's a HUGE temperature difference between being 4 inches away from a 25 watt bulb and being 8 inches away! So one thing I've learned is having an incubator where ALL the eggs are at least 10-12 inches away from the bulb means I can get much more uniform hatching temps. Plus the drop when I open it isn't so severe. Despite that, though, they're easy to build -- and fun! :)

YAY on the Wheaten eggs!! I personally think the Wheatens are really, really handsome birds -- not as flashy as some of the other Marans, but quietly beautiful :) And yay for warm, happy, developing eggs!

Yeah, Shardean, I have to admit the shipping thing makes me nervous too, although there's one breeder on here with cuckoo marans eggs I might have to break down and buy from -- her birds are SOOOO gorgeous! I'm sorry that hatch went so poorly

Farmerboy, yay!!!! How exciting! I have to admit I kinda like the whole mutt idea -- I'm eager and curious to see what's going to come out of my mutt eggs :) All of them should prove to be pretty solid layers, I think. Post pics!!!!

they are just mixs but first hatch ever even from a bator never have so this will be great .... i am getting some other babys from a friend to put in with her .. but the mixs are mostly bantams mixed with a white leghorn or a partridge chantecler .. and the other two are barred rock and one of those roos adn the other is a rir i think or a sex link with one of those lol but im getting pure breds to give her and sell the mix or something
Can't wait for pics.

I have looked at the homemade incubator page before and went out to buy some of the stuff to make it. It just felt so complicated and I guess I am a wussy. I broke down and bought a hova bator. I might try again in the future. Kudos to you for doing it though, thats awesome.

It is overwhelming. I ended up finding a neat YouTube video while looking up how to make an egg candler. It was much more helpful to see videos than to read the tutorials.
I work in a hospital so I got a Styrofoam cooler for free from a vaccine shipment and the rest of the wiring bits and light fixture from a local junk shop for less than a dollar. The only thing that cost me was the thermostat, which was $8 at Lowes. So I have a still air LG with the autoturner that cost me a little over $100 and the $9 homemade one which has better controls on temp and humidity, a better viewing area and its just cool I made it myself! Like Cluckitall, I wish I had made it bigger. I can't fit a turner in it and it probably maxes out at a dozen eggs at a time.
