Putting eggs in the bator on July 25, does anyone wanna hatch along???

It is overwhelming. I ended up finding a neat YouTube video while looking up how to make an egg candler. It was much more helpful to see videos than to read the tutorials.
I work in a hospital so I got a Styrofoam cooler for free from a vaccine shipment and the rest of the wiring bits and light fixture from a local junk shop for less than a dollar. The only thing that cost me was the thermostat, which was $8 at Lowes. So I have a still air LG with the autoturner that cost me a little over $100 and the $9 homemade one which has better controls on temp and humidity, a better viewing area and its just cool I made it myself! Like Cluckitall, I wish I had made it bigger. I can't fit a turner in it and it probably maxes out at a dozen eggs at a time.

About it being to small, I am sure just like hatching eggs each time is a learning experience. Each time we do it we learn things from our mistakes and get better. If you make another incubator you will know to go bigger next time.

I think it is wonderful that you actually made one yourself and if you get any babies I would call it a success at least to me that would be a success. That will mean you are able to make a successful bator on your own, how exciting. I would like to make a cabinet one someday.

Dandydoodle, I can say for sure that if I could build one, anyone can build one. The worst is the wiring -- it took me a LOOONG time to puzzle out how it's supposed to go from the schematics and stuff. I still haven't got the fan part working (blew up the first one 'cause I kinda missed that whole "DC" thing and hooked it up to an AC plug...) but when I do I promise I will write an idiot's guide to wiring incubators, the guide I wished I'd found before wiring mine

On the other hand, being able to go and buy a Hovabator is really nice, too!!!

Haven't candled any eggs yet today -- yesterday they were still all looking green and go!

Chickenboy, you've got to be, ummmm, walking on eggshells about now!

Seriously, I need an intervention. I love watching them wiggling and swimming. I think it may be better than being pregnant. I think if I got an ultrasound whenever I wanted while preggers then I'd very likely stare at it non-stop every day for 9 months.

I love at least quickly candling mine... I don't handle them roughly or keep them out for more than 5 minutes, but seeing them move and change in there, is indeed, addictive. No intervention from me for you candle-a-holics!!

I MAY have 5 rather than 4 that are good. I need to upgrade my 36 lumen light to something brighter...I want to be sure.

Hi could someone help me Ive been having a hen sit on some eggs for about a week and tonight I checked on her tonight and lifted her body up to see the eggs and her belly ( I forgot what its called so I called it the belly) The part that the eggs sit on is missing feathers and looks like it started to bleed not too long ago. Is that suppose to happen??

Yes, they lose the feathers on their belly (I think they call that a brood patch). That is normal. I believe they actually pull those feathers out, so she might have just caused a little bleeding by pulling. I think she'll be fine. Sounds like she's doing everything right so far
