Putting eggs in the bator on July 25, does anyone wanna hatch along???

Whee, Aschenfire! Dang it, I wish I was in on all the excitement. I was also, I confess, out by the coop earlier throwing the current crew some sunflower seeds and asking myself "Why did I get more chickens again?" I definitely upped the PITA factor here -- my nice little insta-flock has been really wonderful in terms of eggs-to-effort ratio... (all eggs, almost no effort.) Now I gotta learn to cull the non-performers, figure out what to do with my roo (butcher, rehome, or build a second coop -- not sure the landlady will go for that!), and figure out something better for a brooder than my old rabbit cage! I plunked it up on the kitchen table today to start setting it up and realized it's gonna be big enough for them for a week. Maybe. Ack!!!

Maybe I can put 'em in the bathtub...

Posted this in the last hatch thread forgot its over.DUH...... panicing tak abreath...... Have some going in lock day after tomorrow WED. ... Tonight Went to turn the eggs just now and one is pipping already!! Humidity in there was 42 and i had just added water to 44 or so So moved him to the lockdown bator Its day16!!... Just saw 2 star cracks a day early in the ones on lock now.. there too.
His membrane around the pip hole is dry and white. But he peeped when i turned his egg! can see his beak moving ...What do i do? Spray his pip hole to soften it or ? humidity in there is right now 76 and i added more water...What about the other eggs in his group ?Should i move them tonight too?day 16? They are due Saturday..GEEZ.

Ooh, uh, Roxanne, I'm on my first hatch, as are a lot of people in this particular hatch session -- so welcome! Mine go into lockdown Wednesday, too. But the point of saying that is to let you know all I could do would be guess what the best thing to do is. For this, I'd start a new thread in the incubation forum and shout out for some experienced answers!

I am such a ditz sometimes.Looking at the eggs that go with the guy whos pipping early see an egg that should be in lock NOW and suppose to hatch tomorrow! Missed moving them. Can i move it now .?or too late?

Go ahead, move them now and put them in lockdown. If none of the others have pipped yet, they should be fine. It is only after they externally pip that they can lose humidity too fast.

I *think* my tiniest egg is rocking...lockdown really did not have to start till this evening, so I candled them one more time...as I was looking at one of the others I heard a noise in the bator...looked again and I THINK the little tiny one is rocking

I am gonna win our little game. One of mine will hatch before one of your Seramas. LOL!!!!!!!!

Probably not you will probably have three Seramas chicks and we will still be rocking.

Finally got the house kinda sorta dug out and most of the veggies processed/frozen/getting ready for canning (that would be the spaghetti sauce) and here to check back in on chickies!!!

Oh I am sooooo jealous. I wish our garden would do that well but, we are just learning though. So how many years have you been doing a garden?

About the baby that had piped and you opened the bator. Use a pair of tweezer and carefully make sure the pip is big enough that his beak can poke out. Also make sure there is a big enough hole in the membrane that his beak can poke out. Don't panic. Don't pull off anymore shell or membrane then you have too, If you pull off to much to soon you could make it bleed to death. So remember all you want to do is make sure it has a way to breath. As long as it can breath it is okay. Take washcloth or a napkin get it very slightly damp and moisten the edge of the membrane. Be very careful not to get water in its mouth or or nose remember all you are trying to do is moisten the edge of the membrane. Put it back in the bator and leave it alone. One of two things will happen it will end zipping the rest of the way out itself or it won't but, as long as it can breath its okay.

If it doesn't zip out on its own wait till everyone else hatches and then worry about this little one. You want to make sure to give it enough time to absorb the yolk sac. Sometimes it takes a chick a couple of days to hatch out and for good reason sometimes when they pip they are not ready to come all the way out yet. So if you wait until the rest of your guys hatch out it should be safe for this one two. You did put everyone in the incubator at the same time, right?

Okay, so take a deep breath. Make sure there is an airway, moisten the edge of the membrane but, just a little ( don't get water in the mouth or nose) Don't break off anymore then you have too. Let me know how things go and if at the end it hasn't zipped out on its own I will walk you through an assisted hatch. It is easy and I have done it quite a few times.

Oh gosh, this is the first time I've gotten to do one in ten years! Which means, of course, it was impossible to keep me out of the dirt this year I planted the most ridiculous number of tomato plants and I'm paying for it now -- and that doesn't even include my paste tomatoes; they won't be ready for another four weeks! Ack! I tried to time it so I wouldn't have to can in August -- I don't know what I was thinking! Just don't know what else to do with all the tomatoes so this batch is more like a fresh chunky veggie sauce for over chicken (yummmm, chicken!) and stuff, and the later batch will be my "proper" spaghetti sauce. Plus I've got jalapenos coming out my ears so I'm gonna make salsa tomorrow or Wednesday.)

Let's see -- I really only gardened heavily for four years in Maine. Then I was living in cities and couldn't do much. Gardening in central Ohio is ridiculously easy -- I swear, you just wave the seeds at the soil and you get plants! Folks here have no idea how good they have it And OMG, a 130 day growing season!!! I love it! I'm on my second crop of squashes and pumpkins, and my third of beans and beets. It's crazy! In Maine we used to pray for a full 90 days without a hard frost.
