"Putting Food By" question

I posted this on the Self Sufficient site, so sorry if you've seen it twice.

I'm a memeber of paperbackswap.com (love this site)

anway, I have a chance to get this book, but it's the 1973 version. I'm not sure if I should wait and try to get a more updated version or if they are all basically the same.

any ideas?
 
Some of the older books are better because they weren't worried about getting sued, so they told you what worked for them. Most of the information should still be appropriate for today. Just my opinion, but I love my 1950's cookbook. NO MICROWAVE recipes!!!
 
Yes and they are so sinfully rich with calories and cholesterol that I too love using them sometimes, haha!! Fried foods, real butter, whole milk, real sugar....anything in moderation is ok..at least that's my motto and I am a size 10, so yes, buy it and enjoy the foods

Putting Food By was one of the best works in its field ever published in my opinion. Sadly it is now out of print and no longer updated. I'd get it.

All of this said you'll want to get a recent copy of the Ball Blue Book for moder, updated times and pressures for canning. PFB is great for explaining why you are doing what you are doing instead of simply telling you to do it. But you're going to need a recent Blue Book for the most up to date guidelines.

I love the old cook and canning books they give more information and you use "real" ingredients not the canned fruit some recipes recommend now.

I have 2 old cook books Meta Givens Modern Encyclopedias of cooking vol 1 and 2 1959. (anybody know how many volumes there were)
The cakes you make from these recipes are the best ever and there are recipes on how to cook possum and musk rat LOL
Then i have a Progressive Farmers cookbook 1960 and those recipes are great too.

Got all these books at flea markets for like a dollar each

you list all your books you don't want anymore, when someone wants one, you pay to ship it to them. you get a credit and use that credit to get books other don't want.

I have the fourth edition of this book by Janet Greene, Ruth Hertzberg, Beatrice Vaughan that I bought six months ago off of amazon for around 11.00 It does have updated information however the original is probably still very useful.​

I had that version and it is an awesome book.. worth having either way I'd say. I lost track of it in/around 1980-83 when I moved multiple times.... maybe I'll go looking for one too. I think that's where I got a fantastic recipe for dilly-beans. mmmmmm
