Thankyou so much for the quick reply.I would not worry about them not being warm. They tend to keep themselves warm. Think of sitting next to someone in a coat at a football game. At best, you can block the wind a bit better, but you keep yourself warm.
With the extra space, they have room to move away from each other, and not get so irritable. They might start pecking if forced closer. I would let this be their decision, they know about being a chicken.
It's actually good to have some space between roost bars, a minimum of 14-16" depending on size of the birds, but more may be needed to keep the birds happy and prevent them from picking at each other, or picking at younger birds/newcomers.I'm sorry, I am referring to the roost bars.
