Pylmouth Rock Experts: Advice Needed

When looking for good birds, try to look for a bit of everything IMO if the bird has yellow legs but a really short back, you are going to be taking the chance of them passing said short back on to their offspring. BUT if the bird happens to have a good back and better colored legs, I would go for that. Why? Because their offspring will most likely have the better legs and back, rather then just say the yellow legs and short back. You would then repeat this process with their offspring and so on and so forth. Line breeding is what has made many Show quality lines over the years, and it is something many breeders still use as a way to get the best of the best. That being said, make sure you add some new blood down the line, or at least try not to breed brother and sister. Better to go father/daughter, mother/son, aunt/nephew, and so on and so forth.

Don't let him fool you, he has been breeding Rocks for a looong time, so I think he qualifies as an expert.

I agree that you need to get a copy of the Standard. The Bantam Standard is available for $35.00, so you wouldn't have to get the more expensive APA standard of perfection unless you want too.
