Pysanky anyone??

Quote:
I bought everything I needed, including the dye online at http://www.ukrainiangiftshop.com/. I bought an oil based varnish and used a paint brush to apply it. I've heard of people pooring a bit of the varnish into their gloved hand and rolling the egg around in their hand.

Thanks for the link and the info Bring.

I guess I'm not really doing 'pysanky'...more just painting eggs and etching them - not using wax or dye or anything. I'm just experimenting right now, and using acrylic paint and acrylic ink....when I tried to paint the varnish on the egg w/ acrylic ink, it kinda started to make the ink run and ruin the design....

....so I'm still trying to figure out what to do...I've seen painters using spray varnish and I'm wondering if that would work w/o ruining the design....

We are so lucky. The Ukrainian Gift Shop is only about 3 miles from our house. During lent, when we work on pysanky, I go over there a couple times a week.
(we varnish the completed eggs with a bit of varnish in the hand, then roll it around and set it to dry. Sometimes it's easiest to do a bunch of them at once.)

You can spray it with a sealer first, probably should use a couple of coats, then the varnish, or whatever finish you like. I use inks and dyes on my gourds and have the same problem.

Are these eggs hollow or do you guys fill it with plaster? I have some 'solid' eggs as well as some plain ole blown out eggs with nothing in them. Now I want to go back and paint more of them

Another question, where do you get the little stands to put them on?

I'm just using hollow blown-out eggs, for decoration or ornaments.

So you fill some of yours with plaster? Interesting....

I'm kinda wondering about the stands too...saw some on Ebay...but who knows.....maybe craft stores would carry them....

Yep, I've done some experiments with a few, filling them up with plaster of paris. Takes forever for all of it to dry out completely, but usually they come out pretty good!

I looked on that site. I think the wooden egg stands would be pretty simple to make, unless you wanted to do something elaborate. Then again, we have a lay to do that stuff with, and my dad has some woodworking skills

I'd probably fail really bad if I tried, LOL.

Average price of a stand- good price- is between 2-3 dollars. Best pysanky has some at reasonable prices and cheaper if you buy 3-4 stand of the same type.
