Hi guys! I just joined and I'm looking to get myself some quails. I live in California and I'm looking to get some fertile quail eggs, hatch and raise them. I only want them to keep as pets and for eggs and I'm looking at what would be appropriate for my area. We have three female Khaki Campbell mix ducks but the backyard is sectioned into 2 halves so we came keep them separated if need be. I was wondering what laws apply to me and what breeds would be appropriate for my area. I love the look of the California quail but I don't know what laws are out there to protect them since they are a native species and I've heard good things about the personality of Coturnix though so any advice, especially incubation and raising advice is welcome.

For Any quail that reside in California you would need a permit, including Californi, gamble and mountain. I don’t know if it applies to bob white and scaled as that’s something I tried to find out, but couldn’t (cdfw gives no info as always). Coturnix you do not need a permit to raise and I love mine. Just don’t keep too many together or else they’ll rip out each other’s feathers. Especially if there is too many males. They are VERY fast growing and pretty nice, but they WILL FLY so keep them locked. Good Luck!

This is a very complex thing.
Beginning with different parameters in hatching, feeding and keeping the various species of quails, going through deseases and attack wounds caused by pecking order (these sometimes real brutal little raptors), ... etc. ... .

A short statement in a forums post is not enough.

I did a few month of research and reading before I bought equipment, hutches and finally breeder eggs.
I would offer you some external links, but they are all in german 🙈😇

But finally I can tell you, these are real cute and very interesting birds ... and haven't bought any eggs since a year 😉

Where are you located? If you're in southern CA, you're not going to be able to get anything because of the New Castle disease quarantine. If you're in northern CA, there are several of us you might be able to get eggs from and who would be happy to talk to you about hatching and raising.

Yeah I'm way down in south Cali so I'm probably not going to be finding anyone.
