So my bob white quail are all in with my Ornamental Waterfowl...

During breeding season for the ducsk I will have cedar chips/shavings in the nesting boxes for the ducks but I have heard that this is deadly for the quail. We ordered 100 2 years ago and the guy put them on cedar shavings as soon as they came in before we could pick them up and half or more of them died before they were 4 weeks old... We talked to someone who raised quail and he said that was way..

Also what kind of boxes will they use for nesting or am I just going to find eggs every where. I raised them last year and they were pretty good about nesting in a fex small boxes I had in their old small pen but they all laid eggs in the same two places..

Suggestions?

TRUE CEDAR IS TOXIC TO QUAIL AND ESPECIALLY SO TO BOBS

IF THEY ARE IN A NATURAL SETTING THE HENS WILL EXCAVATE LIL DEPRESIONS THAT ARE THIER CHOICE SPOTS FOR LAYING. IF NOT WELL I GUESS EVERYDAY WILL BE A DOWN-SIZED EASTER EGG HUNT AT YOUR HOUSE

Thanks.. that is what I thought..

they are in a 75x125 avairy and i was afraid every day might be a Easter Egg hunt. they tend to stay in one area so I may put some little boxes their and see if they will lay there.. if not I am in trouble.. It think I have about 30 hens!

Yeah but in tall grasses..

I wonder how they would do hatchig on their own?
I had another waterfowl breeder have his hatch some on their own this year and then I would just have to catch them after that but then again less eggs..

We have some cedar shavings that are made for pets. I'm guessing if that's the case, then my kind isn't toxic?

What is the preferred type of wood shavings for quail and other birds?

As a rule, pine and aspen shavings are right beside the cedar, even at walmart. I would guess cedar shavings are cedar shavings, fine for rabbits, quail, not so much.... Bill

All cedar is bad for them. In my rabbit cages I put a cedar twig in to keep the smell down, but not for quail.

i raised and showed rabbits for years , we were told way back then that Cedar is not good for them either...even now the "authorities" say cedar is toxic to small mammals /rabbits/birds of all kinds....
