I'm keeping her (assuming gender) indoors 24/7 except when she rides in my palm outside when i go out or on my shoulder which she has now taken to climbing onto even though its hard for her to balance there when i walk since she has 1 foot also if u just had a nice hamster sized place for the button u would enjoy keeping them indoors they only get max up to 4 inches from head to tail mines almost 3 inches if ur kids old enough in sure she would enjoy a pair of buttons in her room a male doesn't crow a lot if it has its wife and a but if u have it by its self they get lonely and well i jeep mine with me from like 5-6am till i sleep around 10pm cuz its siblings didn't hatch and I'm "mom" as for cali quail i have no idea the outdoor Temps for them and i don't know ur weather in sure some one on here keeps California quail i think there cute too with that lil head feather lolGorge. Thanks. My daughter is 12I'm UK based and have buttons. No way would mine let a child play with them, they will just about eat out your hand but hate being picked up. Lonely ones raised as single chicks are the exception, but they really need to be in pairs to be happy. It also gets too cold here to keep them outside year round, I'd agree with everyone else that coturnix/japanese are the best bet for taming and surviving the winter outdoors.
If it helps i hatched 33 coutix quails last week they still under heat at mo but be fully grown in 5 weeks im.in northampton
