Looking for 2 or 3 quials to hatch. How many eggs would you recommend?

Hatching is tough, because you usually need to keep coturnix in a ratio of at least 1 male to 3 females, sometimes 1 to 5, or they get overbred, stressed and injured. If you keep more than 1 male in a small space, they are likely to fight. Alternatively you could just keep hens.

You might have to raise a lot of chicks and re-home the extra males

Yes im keeping 5 female 1 male in one enclosure and 5 females and a male in another one selling rest xx mine was 33 out of 48 didnt expect that many to hatch to be honest so trust me wen i say u dont want to many .... im disabled and unable to work so home all time and have time to sort them all out but i also have four 5 week bantums inside and 4 pullets outside maybe try 6-10 eggs? Xx

That sounds like good advice. I bought 6 eggs on ebay, received 7, so I set all of them expecting a ~50% hatch rate (which most people seem to average on eggs sent through the post). Well, 6 hatched and all survived to adulthood It can be unpredictable! But I figured it's better to have more hatch and try to re-home them than to only get one and have it be sad and lonely. Speaking of which...is anyone in the UK looking for a pair of buttons?

Id suggest asking the few people who were nice enough to tell u there in the uk and ask them were they got there's from and if it was a good place to get them from

King (button) quails are harder to tame, but it can be done. Here's my tamest king quail. I hand raised her from a chick.

California quails can also make good pets when they're hand raised.

I'm super interested, what does hand raising entail for precocial birds? Mine were scared of being handled after probably less than a week despite interacting with them several times a day from hatching. Now I can't pick them up at all (once a week to clean their enclosure) without a long fight and I don't like stressing them out like that.

If you want to tame them, you'll need to spend A LOT of time with them. My tame king quail was raised alone, because she was rejected by her parents.

That makes sense. I'm around them all day as I work in the same room and my presence doesn't seem to bother them at all. They'll eat from my hand, the real panic is only if I try to pick them up and I don't like having to chase them around with my hand.

I've been hoping to take them out in pairs and let them roam around the hallway with me sitting there, but the real hassle is getting them out of and back into their enclosure! I'd mostly just like to get them a little tamer so I can take them out to clean their home without stressing them so much.
