Quail chicks plucking feathers/fluff

Hi There

I have hatched 6 japanese quail 5 days ago, they are all feeding and drinking water, I have them under a white bulb in brooder - tried red bulb but it startled them. but noy they have started to pluck their own fluff/feathers. any ideas what could be causeing it?

It could be too hot in the brooder? What is the temperature in the brooder? I don't recommend a red light for a little group. Emits to much heat and also they can't see the feed or water too well with Red lights.

Also at this stage of growth, the birds will be getting some of their adult feathers in (flight feathers) so they may look a bit ratty. Unless you are talking about injury pecking and baldness?

Not 100% sure about brroder temperature, but its in the living room so might be getting heat from that aswell to make it to hot.

They seem to be going very bald around the wings area, ill try lifting the light a bit to see if it cools it down. But theyre not pecking each other very much mostly self inflicted.
