But any clue on which one laid it? I have jumbo brown Coturnix, Sparkly pearl, and golden Coturnix

That looks like an egg from a bird that didn't get enough calcium. The colour of the egg has nothing to do with the colour of the bird.

Does anybody have pictures of chicks sleeping in “deadbird pose”? My Halloween chicks are being awfully coy about it, but I think it would be useful for new quail owners to see they do sleep that way sometimes.

Remembering the first time you saw a brooder full of limp bodies, didn’t you just about have a heart attack? I freaked— then of course they all stood up, annoyed that I interrupted their nap.

This one would always lay out and then get pecked by their sibling. Nice sibling.

Does anyone have a list of symptoms of mites/lice in quail? One of my girls has stopped laying (not enough light but she has lately for some reason) and has frayed feathers. Whenever I move her feathers out of the way some fall out. I think she's eating and acting normally but I separated her just in case it was contagious. When my picture uploads I can post one.

Under her wing there's nothing and it seems dry but I haven't compared to the others so I'm not sure. The reason I suspect mites is the only area that her feathers are frayed is where there's a ton of sand-like stuff (possible just sand) clumped around her feathers. There are no eggs and I see no bugs. Anyone have any idea what is happening? She just molted about 3 weeks ago but it suddenly got warm again so idk if that would throw her off.

My first thought was molting, but you said she already molted. Can you photograph the feathers and the sandy stuff?

Image 1: the frayed area with 'sand'
Image 2: under her left wing
Image 3: the best picture I could get of the sand
Image 4: another picture of a few sand pieces

Do mites feel like sand on a bird?

I should probably mention she is (was, she stopped laying) the only one that would let our male mate with her, I'm not sure if that would mess up her feathers like though.

Hmm idk why it didnt put the attachment for the photo you need higher resolution for so here it is here
