I keep mine on the ground. The pens get moved around. During fall/winter they're on my garden beds, spring/summer they move around the yard.

I love your system - that's kind of what I was working on this morning (and dreaming about last nite). I want to put certain extra chickens (that aren't really integrated into a flock) to work prepping some empty raised beds in my greenhouse for the winter. I might also put some roosters in that system too if they aren't in breeding pens. And it could be where I raise chicks or expand into quail eventually.
