I saw your video Niki, of the quail making the egg call sound. I had never noticed this with my older ones, but there is one or two of my younger ones that seem to do this a lot. Do they do this if they are getting mated? I have 7 girls in that pen, with only 1 male. I need to put all of them together (browns) to have 10 females to 2 males, but haven't done it yet. So do they make this sound regardless of mating? I am getting 6 eggs daily out of that pen, so there is one girl that isn't laying yet. Just curious, since I know I have too many females in the 7:1 pen!

Oh, and what's the chattering sounding call mean?

Chattering? That's normally them being aggressive to one another. Does the one that's chattering cause all the others to act paranoid until it calms down? Does it also chase some around and peck at them with no intent to mate? If so that's the "im grumpy and want to beat someone up until i feel better call" (don't you just love how i name them?)

I've heard hens do this call BEFORE i even saw them being bred but soon after the roo would breed htem (soon after as in days later i'd see the roo mating them) so yes i think it's suffice ot say if you're hearing specific hens doing this that they are more than likely laying or going to be laying shortly

been a busy bee all day putting electric up around my bird pens, and spending time with my brother and his wife

One of my A&Ms chatters a lot, but it is usually directed at me

And I think I wasn't clear enough on the egg calling thing? What I was wondering was if the hens do this because they are wanting to be bred, but aren't getting it? I'm not making any sense, bear with me, I'll figure out what I'm trying to say!!

Okay, in my one cage of jumbo browns, I have 7 females and only 1 male. Only one of the hens in this cage makes this call that I have seen, and there is one hen that has not started laying yet (7 hens=6 eggs).

So I guess, if I can make sense this time, is I'm wondering if the hen is making this call because she is not being bred? Or do they just do this?

I need to put both groups together, then I wouldn't have to worry about it

OOH i getcha!!

Well like I said i've seen hens make this call before the roo even started mating her but soon after it he'd start. I hear my hens make this noise MORE when they are breeding/laying than I do before they do. I read that that call is the hen calling the roo to mate with her *or atleast giving him the hint*

I had always wondered before why my roos seemed to knwo which hen was going to be laying soon (as before htey'd start laying the roo would start mating them) and here it's because of that call. I think it's the hens way of making her availability known. Maybe in the wild it's how a lone hen finds her mate (along with the roo crowing).

that's a toughie there but if it was my bird i'd assume she was getting bred or soon to be.

sorry to ask but do only the males make that weird loud, sharp metallic sounding call?

they all make chiring sounds when i look in their pen. what the heck does it mean?

what does the egg call sound like?

i'm only asking because my coturnix make a lot of strange noises. wondering what it all means.
