I have 3 male button quail and 2 females. Currently each bird has over 8sqft of space which is a ton and I haven't seen them fight yet or atart mating. They're 8 weeks and no eggs. I'm planning to buy more females, maybe 3. Is 3 males to 5 females good, or will they fight. They have a ton ot space per bird.

I've never kept button quail, but I know they don't "work" like Japanese quail/Coturnix—their sex ratios are different, flock sizes are different. I was under the impression they tend to form single-partner bonds as well. More space is good, but if they aren't able to comfortably form multiple pairs in captivity it might not matter.

How much reading have you done on your species?

I know I've told you before that button quail don't mature as fast as coturnix. It is also going into winter, so they may not even start laying until spring.

I know you mentioned wanting to give them enough light to lay year 'round, but if you do that, be aware that it will shorten their lifespan, so the only reason to do that is if you are trying to breed them all year long.
