We have a quail that is one of our oldest in our flock (1 yr.). But today, I looked at her and her eye looks weird and swollen. I don't know if anything's wrong or not. She acts normally and does what a quail would do. Here's a pic. Maybe nothing is wrong with her, but she still looks suspicious. The place right of her nose is bare. She had the cut above her eye for most of her life. I don't quite remember what I did to treat that cut but otherwise, it caused no problem. Is it because she was bullied? Or is the environment I'm providing not sanitary enough? Or infection?

By the way, I've been checking around the threads and want to say that the quail doesn't seem tired or lethargic. Her poop is regular (no green or watery) and I've separated her. She doesn't close the eye either but scratches it from time to time. Is it because her feet were dirty and she scratched her eye so that it became like that? Her feet are usually clean and I try to keep it like that and for all the other quail.

Have you checked her for mites?

It's hard to say if scratching at it is the cause or the symptom. Her eye looks clear, but it looks like there's some damage to the eye lid.

OK. Her eye lid had the cut for a few months a nothing happened but it looked a bit worse today. I haven't checked her for mites. How do you do that? But I'm gonna look at her again now.

UPDATE: no red spots or bumps appeared to be in the affected area. The baldish spot is nearly gone because the feathers had dried out (they were wet before). The quail looks for regular now but I am still wondering what caused her to look like that in the first place. I really appreciate your feedback!

I'm guessing here, but I suspect that the cut in the eyelid means that there may be a bit of a gap when she closes her eye. This would make it more likely to get dust or other irritants in there.
