The males are crowing again, and the girls are laying again. Got my first fart egg, of all birds from the coturnix, not much bigger than a marble. Also got one with no spots.

The fart egg might have been from the older girl we got off CL, she laid a thin shelled egg last week, its her color but its really thick this time.

Mine has started laying in the last week.. first day one, then 3, and now 5-7 eggs a day...

I got these last year, but thought some might like to see what happens when they "fart" TOO big....

yep just a ridiculously small egg, usually they have no yolks. Probably wouldn't hatch lol. Never got a pic of it but last year one of the coturnix laid a huge double yolker poor bird.

a "fart egg" is by definition an egg that is laid with no yolk. You can find out if it is a fart egg by candling it under a bright flashlight. I use the handheld LED flashlights. If there is no yolk shadow then there is no yolk. I can tell you without knowing whether you candled the above that it is a fart egg. I too get the occasional egg with no spots and sometimes I will get 2 or 3 fart eggs a month or two. I also get blobs of egg that were laid with no sheel or membrane and have had one or two that had no shell but had a membrane. There is always a chance of the reproductive system having something out of wack every now and again. I am sure your girl will lay a normal egg again within days. More often than not fart eggs come from new layers OR right after a hen has just begun laying again for the season. There are "fart eggs" in all species. I have had duck, quail, and chicken fart eggs.

Enjoy your mini egg but it won't hatch since there is no yolk so I wouldn't attempt to incubate it.

I'm not going to debate what a fart egg is or is not, but trying to hatch a "starter" egg is not recommended.

To the OP.. In the first pic....can the marbel and one to the left, but the right 3 are most likely hatch-able.

Coturnix hens can lay very small, to giant "Starter eggs". Neither is hatch-able. Give them a week or two, and then....hatch away.

These pics were fantastic Joe125. I personally like the word fart. I saw you use it another day when you said "incubator fart". Maybe it's cause our father used to call all of us children fartknockers. So for me your post was extra special. I also love "brown is the new black" it has honestly made me order more jumbos from quaillady. Are you in marketing or something?

Seriously. The pictures are clear, nice, educational and I do learn from your posts, thanks. Seriously, he did call us all fartknockers. And yes....I did order yet another little dozen of brown jumbo eggs from Quaillady because brown IS the new black. Although I want some blacks really, really bad.
