Quail feed

I applaud your efforts jack & mommy's duckies. My 3 year old wakes up every day wondering when the eggs will get here(and the worms to he IS a boy). Im going to hide them from him in the incubating stage, but unless he hurts one, i fully intend to involve him with the birds, and mealworms, worms, and other things I will grow for them as well.

jack & mommy's duckies :

I've been reading the thread on meal worms and think it would be a cool project for my son. Make him feel a little more included (he is only 4). But I've been wondering about seeds. I've read tons on google and they do say some use seeds with the feed and some don't. What are your thoughts???
And if you do use seeds can I have the exact name so I can search them out and add them if I decide I want to.
Also I hear things on cat food and others. Just looking for thoughts and opinions.
Thanks

Meal worms are a great way to include your son in the raising of your birds.

My grandchildren, ages 3 & 7, love to feed them to my japs. Not only is it great for the kids it's also good for the quail. My quail are so calm compared to alot of people's birds.
We've occasionally keep a few quail in the bottom of one of our finch aviaries and they are pretty good at cleaning up the spilled finch seed. As a once in a while treat, mostly just to give them something to do, we will put a millet stick in the quail cages, but we do not regularly include seed in their diets. If they eat too many seeds they won't eat enough of the higher protein foods they need to grow properly.
We've never fed cat food, we don't believe a carnivore diet is appropriate feed for birds. We feed ours a 26% - 28% bird feed crumble with fresh vegies (they love sprouts) and meal worms as treats.
