Quail feeders

I was unable to find a small-scale feeder for my pair of quail, so i took a small plastic nursery plant pot and fit it upside-down over an empty BareMinerals makeup jar. It fit snugly, so i cut a hole in the side of the pot big enough for the quail to reach in and filed the edges smooth with a nail file. My quail can't sit (or take dust baths) in their dish and food isn't left out long enough to become stale or attract pests.

I used the base of a cd holder. You know the ones that stack on top of each other a pole thing. easy to fill and lift out and place back. I also only have one pair.

Thought I'd add my latest quail feeder. My quest has been to cut down (way down) on the amount of feed newly hatched quail will waste if given the opportunity. This latest feeder is made with 2" PVC and the holes were made with a 7/8" wood bit. The newly hatched quail will get in the feeder so I don't start using this one until they are 4 days old. At that time they are too big to get through the hole. This feeder will get them up to about 2 weeks of age. There is zero waste with this feeder. There is a hinged lid to add feed as needed.

So, OK, I use the rectangular plastic feeder above.
1. Yes there are problems. The top has nothing to "fit" to. It will fall off. The FIX--put a rock on the top to keep it weighted down.
2. They still kick the feed out of the rectangular. The FIX--put a pan (Grammas baking/cornbread pan) look at Good Will. Set the feeder in the pan and what they scratch out can still be eaten. I empty the pan of leftovers to my chicken feeders every few days.
3. Think about it and the ideas will come.

Great job on the design....anything we can do to save feed waste is worth the effort...I've been looking at changing the design of my feeders in our production room...saw something last week similar to your design that a farmer in our area of over 20 years was using...this is a two inch pipe for the young ones...do you have the same design in four inch for adult quail ?

I'm currently working on a 4" model. Here is a model of a side shot of what I have in mind. With the feeding holes in the center I felt it takes away ~1/2 of the capacity of the pipe so I'm trying to configure an internal structure that will allow one to utilize most of that space but still retain the "spill-proof" element of the feeder. I'm wanting it to be an externally mounted feeder as well.

I like that design...close to the one I saw...Keep us posted on the development....wasted feed is always a big problem with any gamebirds....
