I'd like to raise quail for eggs but not necessarily for meat. We will probably harvest some but not all. How long do quail lay? How long do they live? Is this a crazy idea?

We raise layers currently and have raised and processed meat birds several times. Thank you!

Quail are wonderful! They lay like crazy and they are just a whole lot of fun. I've been raising for eggs only for almost eight years now. Really the trick is to have a plan for all those Roos! I have some in my greenhouse and I offer them as greenhouse pets to other people in the area. Sometimes you can find a restaurant that will take them, I've even offered them as dinner to a friends redneck wedding. They can actually live a long time , I have an ancient Roo that is about five. I hope you have a great time with these charming little birds!

2 years.
You can expect a quail to lay well for a good 2 years... If you feed them well and don't offer daily treats.

They will stop laying in the winter unless you provide extra light. As long as they're getting 14-16 hours of light/day, they will lay daily with few exceptions.

Thank you!! Why roos in the greenhouse, what benefit?

I was just curious why put them in the greenhouse, what don't I know about that idea :)

I am also starting up raising quails again for their eggs, but yeah, they can live from 1.5 years to about 4 it seems. The ones I had were in my greenhouse and they loved darting between plants and picking at whatever they saw. Taking dust baths in patches of dirt and getting some shade under leaves and bushes. I remember I found some eggs in between some plants.
