Quail Forum Information

Well, for the ones I have now, hubby built a "table" for them, so I guess they aren't hung, really, but they are halfway up the wall. The table hasn't got legs, it is just screwed to the wall. He figured if it needed more support, he would make a bracket to hold it to the ceiling joist - but it is holding up pretty well so far. It is like those "floating shelves" that you can get for your house.

I have dual purpose chickens in there, so they need the floor space, but they don't really fly up much, except to get up onto the window sill or the perch (perch is on the other side of the room).

In one of the other coops (which is where the quail might go) I was thinking of making a hanging wood frame, to just slide the cage onto. That way I could remove the cage to clean it out when it needed a really good hose down, and it would still be cage "open bottom", so the poo could go through to the floor of the coop. The cage I have the 6 in right now is 28x48x18inches tall. (the coop I might hang the quail cage in has bantam cochins - not much flying there, either).

I can get pics, though, later today when I go out to check eggs - I got 1/4 of an inch of ice over everything out there

so I am trying to stay inside as much as possible.

I am going to be overrun with Jumbo coturnix soon.

I've hatched out 44 so far, and today is hatch day for the next set of 16. There are still 50 eggs in the bator, with 25 on standby to go in tomorrow (my set days will be scheduled so Fridays are my hatch days for chickens and quail) and I'm already collecting the next tray.

I just think they're awesome with their quick turnaround... within 2 months you have your second generation hatching! They're yummy, make great pets, and are good for first time bird-dog trainers. What more could you ask for in a bird?

WOW! I didn't expect my "revival" of the thread would generate this much interest so quickly! That's great!

I was asked what I am doing for a waterer up here in the Great White North, well, Feeding time and watering time is at about 4:00 pm and everyone in the barnyard lets me know they are waiting, except the quail. They wait patiently for me and their food and water.
I am feeding cracked corn in a 24" bird feeder trough. They (13 of them) will eat the entire trough (about 3 pounds) in a day. As for water, I have to bring one out with me each day and switch out the froze solid one in their coop. I am using a small poultry waterer about 10" tall filled about half to 2/3rds full and they drink it down to 1/3 full by the time it freezes.
They sure put up a fuss with each other when they realize it is food and water time. I get a kick out of their antics. I can't wait to expand the flock when spring gets closer. I am figuring a egg buy around the 7th with a hatch about the end of Feb. That way I am not living with birds in the living room for months and months before spring!
Any possible egg sellers out there??? I am looking for about 50-100 coturnix.

If you are looking for jumbos or A&M's, pop57 has some he's selling. I got 21 eggs from him a month or so ago and had 16 hatch from them. I don't know anyone that has regular pharoahs in that quantity.

papagoose - I am in KS. not quite the "great white north". I have Quail in a wire wood frame cage (with cardboard blocking each side) in our round top with a heat lamp. I know it's expensive but I can't help but spoil them. I'm sure they would freeze if not for the light. HAHA!! I also have some just reaching 7 weeks, they are in a oval horse tank with insulation around the outside and a 100w light bulb setting on the wire top - this is also inside the roundtop. We have only got down to 0 or maybe -5 this year and I have not had any frozen waters yet this year. I am using the plastic gallon waters. In the peacock pens I use a heated dog bowl. Well worth the time and fustration of pounding out ice. There are several other ideas on the BYC site.
