Quail Hatch - Egg Carton Vs Reg method - Amazing results - UPDATE

i tried the carton method in a LG for just the last 3 days,,,, warning,, with the chicks ON the carton, they can reach the heating element

That is true but I hatch in egg cartons in my LG all the time and have never had a chick injure itself on the element.

I use a turner for days 1-18 because Tori is right - the LG is not high enough to tilt the cartons. Never thought of tilting the whole unit, so I'd be curious to see how that works!

I've used the LG (with a turner) for incubating, but I use one of Miss Prissy's chick-o-bators as a hatcher. I was afraid they'd hit the element, even without the carton.

That would be sad...

I was wondering, since I have an extra set of trays just for quail (and I never need them all at once), what if I stuck the eggs in one of the turner trays right on the wire, instead of in the turner itself? it would keep the eggs upright, prevent them getting underneath the carton or tray, and would be dishwasher safe! (I love easy cleanup) I have some quail in my bator right now, so I'm going to try it that way this time and see how it goes.

Anyone else every try it this way?

you mean when day 18 ends,, instead of using a carton,,, just stick the egg holders in the wire, instead of laying them down?

it may work with quail,, with chickens i could see them bending the wire when they wiggle around.

I think I would still use the egg cartons with chicks, because I can easily toss them after the hatch, but it's harder to get a hold of the quail cartons here, so I thought if I could hatch them in the turner tray I could easily clean them up for the next time.

Heather, I have used the turner trays too because I could not find
quail cartons. You are right, they are hard to find.

What I have found is the eggs hatch much better is they are in the
egg carton postition.

Best of luck with your next hatch.

I know this is late, but again, I'm researching

I currently have an LG 9200 and have 7 "mutt" eggs in a paper egg carton with the bottoms of the cups cut out. I have one side of the 'bator propped up on a corrugated cardboard box top that is about 6" tall. When I "turn" my eggs, I just move the box top to the other end of the 'bator, which makes the eggs tilt the opposite direction. There is plenty room in the LG to use the egg carton method for hatching

Hope this helps someone!

Oh, sorry...

Yes, you are correct. Prop one end up, then the other, and repeat... But you need to raise the end of the carton up at least an inch, better yet two inches, and there just isn't enough headspace in an LG.

Why not just tilt the whole 'bator? That's what I'm doing

If you tilt the whole bator, how many inches tall should the lifter be? I seen the pp mention 6". Can you use shorter than that...like 1"?

Also, do you have to cut a hole in the bottom with a still air bator?
