thanks,,,,and since mine is 1 of those cheapo's,,,i still turn them in the carton,,,,,,when you do that do you do a "flip" and go back and forth,,,or spin them and keep the air sac on top?
and the carton didnt really have anything to do with the fertility right?,,,,but might have something to do with the 1 partial?
i really think i am gonna do the carton thing since i dont have the turner and their just laying there ,,,, makes me walk round them so careful i cant feel my feet haha
sorry for all the questions,,,just that this has interested me,,hehe ( simple things amuse simple minds)
Thanks for asking these questions and thanks to those who provided answers. I did a search specifically for egg carton method, so I could figure out what I am doing. I have the LG still air plugged in, trying to watch temp/humidity. Eggs are going in probably monday, and this is my first time ever.....I'm nervous about this whole thing, so keep posting your Q&A's for all of us newbies.

Depending on how many eggs you have you should fill extra space in the bator with
water bottles. The extra mass helps stabilize temps A LOT. Also consider adding
the fan and turner.
thanks PC, I am putting in approx 20 eggs, so not a whole bunch. I am not sure if I want to spend the money on a fan/turner for this model(it was a freebie to me) or save up and buy something like the octagon 40 or equivalent. Still fence sitting here. Just killing me tho, there sits this incubator and IMMA WEENY, so I have read every word in every forum about bators, methods, disasters, etc and figured, hey, I can make that disaster too. After everything I have read, I am going to go ahead and try the egg carton method. My 9 yr old is going to be responsible for turning them 3 days a week due to my work schedule, and I think this will make it easier and faster for both of us. Do you cut the bottoms of your egg cartons before placing the eggs in em?

In your case you will not be using the egg cartons until day 18. For the first 18 days
you will turn them 1/2 turn twice a day or 1/3 turn 3 times a day.
No I don't cut the cartons but I am no egg carton method expert as I only tried
it this one time and on quail, not chickens.
One positive about using a basic incubator at first is the learning experience of it all.
Plenty of people have gotten good hatches with a basic still air bator.
I wish I had read this thread before my quail hatch. I put them on their sides for hatching and I had two pip and die, and several more that looked full size at candling on day 14 that didn't even pip. I still got 9 healthy babies (though I had to help the last two out when they zipped and stayed that way for well over a day), but next time (in about eight weeks, give or take, with any luck) I'll try hatching in a carton.
Thanks to the folks who have brought this thread back. I was amazed
by the results.
Currently I have been using my Little Giant with turner to hatch my quail
since my friend is using my Brinsea to hatch some ducks. I hope to
try this experiment again soon.
