So this morning I am restocking the feeder in the grower pen and I quess I was just to slow, putting a mat down.
Had one jump down on the ground as one flew over me. I have Jumbo Brown Coturnix, this batch is 3 1/2 Weeks old.

So happened that I had my Schnauzer with me. Told him no not to get it. So he followed it as it mosyed around under the pen behind the pen across below the pen. The dog finally got it headed in the right direction and herded it back to the front of the cage in front of the door and they both stoped.

The other quail high tailed it to the Brush pile I had made the day before about 15 feet in front of the cage. I look over there and there are my ducks watching the pile of brush. I bang around it - nothing. While I am doing that it was going under and walking out the other side and I didn't see it. Ducks did.
I watch the ducks and they are walking to the back of the yard but still watching something.

In the mean time there is a hawk circling and screaching. I see the quail flush up to the property line fence that is covered in bushes and think its a goner. Waite a bit go over and there it is on the ground. When I try to net it I missed and it headed through the chain link fence to the neighbors. I gave up figured it was a goner. Ducks didn't.

Look at the back yard about 5 minutes later and the ducks are headed to the back of the property again. So I go back there and there is the quail taking a dust bath. That area was last years compost area and is really soft fluffy rich dirt. He has so happy he didn't even care that I was coming. He just kept bathing. Caught him up and put his little butt back in the cage. Then went to fix a dust bath for all of them.

So if you need to recall some quail and the recall pen doesn't work, well now you know what to do. Try a Schnauzer or some Muscovy Ducks. Who new they were herders. Oh, and don't forget to set up a giant dust bath about 50 feet from the pens for enticement.

When my quail escape, they stare at me in the grass so dazed and confused. All the chickens and ducks, they are overwhelmed. I creep up behind them, grab them, and their little butts are back in the cage...they are so silly at times.

Most of the time I can just pick them up. But today, probably cause the dog was right there, the birds wanted to adventure.

Then thought better of it when the hawk started screeching. Then it was what to do, what to do.

I think the fly boy is the one that goes for it about every 4 days. His days are numbered with a 2 week count down, though.
