The hens are in a 6x6 area with access to a smaller 2 story pen attached. Both areas are full of shavings deep enough for the quail to bury themselves in. I also have 3 smaller, empty quail pens which I intend to use as a breeder pen, a grow out pen, and an extra pen for any quarantine needs. I plan on starting out by buying one male and putting him with 4 of my hens in the pen intended for breeding. I do plan to incubate. I'm in the process of researching incubators and best brooder setups.Just curious...how much ground area do you have for them?
Does the area have plenty of leaves?
What are your plans for the additions from hatchings?
You mention hens...you mention hatching...nothing about males...what breeding plans do you have?
How many males do you need for that many hens?
Do you plan to incubate?
I have a friend who raised them before and had a major problem with snakes, eggs and little guys. He finally had to install a 3' high sheet metal fence around his quail compound 4" in the ground to stop the slithery creatures. Snakes have an excellent tongue/smeller.
Great idea! I will give this a try!! Thank you!Welcome to BYC. The SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS word freezes up my brain activity so sorry can't think of anything else to say.
I remember years ago on BYC someone used poultry wire and put it out around their facility(for birds) twisted like toy slinkees. They said when the s things tried to crawl through it they got stuck and died there - then wild critters and birds picked them off and ate them.
You might want to try that.
