Hi, I'm Julie. I used to have chickens but since I am 63 it is too heavy to carry hay, change beddings, etc. Plus the noise, and then I came down with bird handlers disease (asthma) and finally, allergy to chicken eggs. Changing to quail I found much easier. Smaller everything, ,very quiet and amiable little fellows, apartment or urban yard friendly, the boys don't make much sound compared to rooters, AND there are NO zoning codes to forbid a game bird that is already native to California, so they overlook quail. Plus the eggs are more protein and higher nutrition so what's not to love? I am not allergic to them or their eggs, I don't wheeze now.
(2) How many quail do you have right now? I currently have one non-stop egg production machine and two brooders. So I can hatch 20 at a time about once per month, and process half of those for food and the females for eggs. I keep about 20 birds and rotate them out as they age.
(3) What breeds do you have? These are Coturnix quail in colors that include A+M, Italian, Tibetan, pharoah, egyptian, and tuxedo. I have no blue egg layers and that is ok because if they got too pretty I would not be able to eat the eggs!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard quail? During quarantine I ws the one who was never bored, I had lots of creative projects with making drinking equipment and feed dishes and new racks to house the babies, etc. That became my Meet Up group for survival gardens and sharing with others. This website helped me a lot, especially with incubator temperatures and humidity questions. I just love birds, they are fascinating and beautiful.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Vegetable gardens which appreciate quail poop fertilizer. And I have a turtle pond. And now the Meet up group too, to learn from my community. And my next big goals include aquaponics- raising talapia fish for food, plus maybe try raising some guinea fowl or other types of game birds.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I also have parakeets but they are far less exciting. I grow items useful in cooking such as garlic greens, long onions, carrots, beets, rosemary, thyme, sage. It is fun to make stew or soup and go get fresh ingredients. My next goal is rotiserrie gamebird in my air fryer seasoned to look and taste like roast Chinese duck (I live near Oakland China town) with the orange glaze and to-die-for taste. I hope
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I guess I have been on here reading it for years but finally decided to join!
