quail nest boxes

Yes, I buy play sand just for the quail.
I mix some DE in it but not everyday.
I have a sive that I keep in the Oyster shell bag and I sive them some oyster shell into it.
I also add their egg shells and more chicken egg shells that I just dry and crush.
If I have some I also put a bit of wood ashes in it. But usually the chickens get at that (from bonfire that I burn stumps or tree trimings just for the ashes) and get it scattered about the fire area. So I just scoop some of that dirt in. (Wouldn't use that with White Coturnix).

Thats about it. Mix it up and put it in they are all over it. The tray underneath gets loaded with sand, but it gets empied to the compost pile and I notice chickens head over there a few days later. My compost is not a pile but a row so everyday a new area gets added to.

They really need the sandbox with this heat and humidity. It helps them stay cooler. I have noticed they don't pant as much when they have sand to lay in. They take turns for the most part.

Take turns flattening out on frozen water bottles in the afternoon too. Or sitting inbetween then.
