Thanks to everyone for the great information! @ChickCharm- those are some nice coops! you've inspired me!! thank you so much for sharing.. Merry Chirstmas to all!
We raise our Bobwhite Quail in flight pens that are 50ftX50ft square. There is a flight net that is about 20feet in the air hanging from floating cable. There are about 100hens and 15 roos in the pen. We have no issues with fighting and they are on ground with natural vegetation so everyday during laying season is an easter egg hunt for me and my husband. Occassionally one or two hens will get overlooked and find a really good spot and end up hatching there own little ones. We don't mind that at all. Nice to see that happen actually. We did put in some nesting boxes and some hens used them for a while. They just prefer to find there own spot under tall grasses and make there own. We want them to be as natural as possible so we don't try to encourage the nesting boxes. If they use them great if the don't that's just fine too.
I've had bob, cots and buttons, and they all used the nest boxes I gave them. Sometimes they'll lay an egg outside the nest box, but when I check later on, they'll have rolled the egg into the nest with the rest.
I've talked with jimsbirdhouse & he recomended to me to provide my Bob's with a nesting box's. Mine never layed last year but hoping next year will be different. I now house 25 roo's & about the same number of hens. He said his Bob's use them. Mentioned that they like their privacy when laying. This guy raises alot of Bob's so I'm gonna provide one for my covey next year. What do I have to loose plus it would be nice to gather eggs in one spot. Who knows I'll find out I hope.
Bobwhites will use nest boxes. What I use is a Protein barrel cut down so it is about 16inches tall then I cut a door so the bird can get in. At this time I have 300 hens and 100 rooster in a 68ft flight pen. At the ratio I have I should get about 1500 eggs per week. I would hate to think that I had to pick them if they were scattered
