I really want to hatch some Californian Quail..... any that are available for sale are really expensive and id have to get them shipped....

so....

not far from us there is quite a bit of park land and there are a lot of Californian Quail there.... so how to find nests???? and best places to look???

any one had experience as to where they lay and what to look for??? do they like thick vegetation to hide their nests or is long grass their choice???

thoughts.....?

No state allows the collection of wild quail eggs. What you are contemplating is illegal and wrong.

Sorry I did not realize that you are not in the U.S. I strongly encourage that you check your laws before following through with your plans.

You are allowed to hunt quail all year around here :)

At some point in history someone must have collected eggs of various birds from the wild...... i realize it is illegal in some places but i wasnt trying to turn this into a rotten vege throwing contest....

im sorry if it is put the wrong way in the first post...... im not out to harm anything.... and was asking about the nesting habits of quail...

Here the states that have quail populations do have hunting seasons. Hunting season allows the taking of quail through a legal means of killing them. It does not allow the taking and possession of live quail and it does not allow the collection of quail eggs for any purpose.

I would not be surprised if New Zealand has similar laws.

Just go for many walks in the woods at the right time and shhhhh about where you got your quail... that’s IF you could find a nest which wouldn’t be easy and if you find one and don’t get attacked by the parents you’re probably doing them a favor by taking them. I’d try to find someone nearby that has quail and get eggs that way.

You did nothing wrong. It was a legitimate question. It’s up to you to interpret your local laws. Don’t mind the judicial input
