(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? New to poultry. Taking over a corner of my in-laws property to get started with quail. They already have chickens and ducks.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 25 bob white eggs in the incubator. 4 call ducks in the pond. Around 18 chickens - 8 adults, 8 new blood youngsters that were hatched about 5 weeks ago, and two in-house hatchlings that are two weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have? Rhode Island Red and Ameraucana at least. Not sure what the others are.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Fresh eggs are so much better than those from the store, and the occasional bird on the dinner table is nice. Trying my hand at bob white to flip that ratio - raising them more for meat with eggs as the bonus.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Designing small structures like cabins and barns.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Wife, four-year-old son, four-year-old Aussie mix, and a 17-year-old cat living a semi-nomadic RV life between Alaska, Florida, and West Virginia. Currently on the farm in WV. I'm a master electrician working for an engineering company.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found BYC a couple months ago through web searches doing research to build a quail coop. No matter what term I searched for in Google there was an informative thread about it in BYC. Have been reading the threads as a guest and figured it would be the proper thing to join.
