This morning I found one of my quail unable to stand up. She is eating and drinking when I hold her near the food- and otherwise seems fairly bright and normal. She can stay sitting up for a while when propped up- but otherwise just lies there on her side with her legs out out one side.

Any ideas as to what is wrong with her?? And any advise on what I can do for her would be most appreciated.

The first thing we'd need to know is how old it this Quail?
If this is a chick and under heat, what is the temperature of the brooder?
What kind of feed are you giving it? (Brand Specific please)

Lets start there and work it out.

Ok..so Its not a chick..I dont know the exact age - I only bought them less than two months ago- and it was laying then. I am feeding it game bird starter- as that was the what I was told by the person I bought it from. Barastock is the brand name- But its an Australian brand- So I dont know if you will have heard of it. AS soon as I found it- We separated it form the other quail and it is inside in a little cage. Its feet do respond to touch- she does move them a little when I touch her feet. So she isnt paralised.

www.merckvetmanual.com is a good illness resource site
try palpating her abdomen to make sure she isnt eggbound
Really i have no clue what y'all have downthere for common illnesses so I wouldnt even really know where to start.
Does she show any signs of trauma?
what do her stools look like?

Thanks for that link.. Im sure it will come in handy in the future too- so saved it..

I asked the guy I bought them from...he has never seen it... no trauma either.

Her poop looks normal enough...just not as often and bigger than normal.

this is what I was thinking also. Try a lil caro syrup and water also, its what I do to chicks that are having thriving issues.

Good tips there. If you can get some Poly Vi Sol "without Iron" That can help too. A drop or two in her water...
I have not found Poly Vi Sol without Iron so I use Tri Vi Sol which is equivalent.

Hope ya good luck with her,
David

lol.. I had to google to make sure I knew what products you were referring to..But..no worries. I will see what I can find out here that is most like the products you have metioned.. This morning she is still the same... Bright and alert just cant walk. Hopefully some vitamins and corn syrup will help her along.
Thanks

I had a 4 week old Texas A&M that had something similar. It seemed to me as though it had a stroke. The first day I had to hold it up at the feeder and waterer, at which time it ate and drank like crazy. I thought if the others started picking on it I would uthanize. They just kind of walked over it. It was able to stumble its way to the feeder after the first couple of days. Slowly over the course of the next 2 weeks it improved. Now at 6 weeks it walks a little funny but otherwise it seems okay. I would have bet it was going to die but now I'm thinking it is out of danger.

So there is hope for her yet. I have brought her inside away from the other quail. I thought I would give her a week to show improvement - so hopefully she will as its never nice to have to consider their fate. ( I dont eat them)
