You don't have to give them seeds at all, that's just a treat. You can give them just about anything for a treat. I don't know if TSC has millet, but that is all that parakeet seed is: Red and White millet seeds.

I use pine shavings with mine, and haven't had any problems. You probably won't find game bird feed at TSC, from what I've heard, so high-protein chick starter would be fine. I believe the highest they have is 24%, which isn't that much lower than the game bird starter I get. And yes, for adult buttons, just mush eggs and shells both, the hens will pick the shells out for calcium.
