Quail tractor design idea

Haha my coop has a nest box on the side, and I’ve been thinking about putting a sand box there to see if I can get them to go up to use the space.

A Sandbox will be very well accepted there!

By the usual specifications people give, 4x12 would be plenty of space for how many you said, it’s usually accepted that 1 sq ft of space per bird is a good number.

Yes, but more space, as this 1sqft per bird, will lead to a more calm flock.

I think a big challenge will be keeping predators out. Everything eats quail. It's fairly simple to predator proof a permanent ground pen by adding/burying a wire mesh apron/skirt around the edges of the pen. You can't really do this with a tractor. It seems like it would be very easy for a snake to get inside. Also quail are pretty dumb and I imagine moving the tractor without running over the quail will be another challenge, especially if there's a few dozen in there. But I haven't kept them in a tractor myself. Hopefully someone who has will comment....

I bought a prefab thing that I spent 2 days and nearly $50 reinforcing because it was so rickety. I plan to build this for my extra males, and another eventually for a grow out pen:

My partner is in the process of building something very similar to this! We have a main coop (old rabbit hutch) on our deck and I wanted a summer day use area for them to be out in the yard. I picked up the hardware yesterday for the hinges and lock. I did not think about adding an outside hidey-box! Thank you for sharing the link :)

I am so excited to build a lawn-coop for our Canadian summers, even though I read that having quail on grass can kill the grass because it is too nitrogen rich and needs to be composted, and that they will decimate a patch of grass so you have to move the “tractor” several times a day. I have also read that when quail are able to munch on everything out in the garden they are more likely to get ringworm and even tapeworm! But I see so many garden, ground-level quail coops on here, so I feel like they will be fine... although, I was beginning to feel like I should keep them “cooped up” on the safety of our deck all year round!
