Quail won’t stop CROWING.

Besides vent checking, one way I found that was easy to see if I had a male or not was to put it in a kennel (or whatever container) and then keep it inside with me where I could hear it. They will eventually crow looking for friends. If they don't crow after 30 minutes, pretty good chance it's a female. I don't know how big your flock is, but just a tip in case you have some you're not sure on.
I do the same, I put them in a bin on the floor in the bathroom and wait to hear crowing.

I have 6 pens as well with 1 male with his group of hens and mine are pretty quiet as well. I think once a roo has an established harem he doesn't feel the need to make so much noise.
This is true, although I do have one roo with 8 hens (I meant to redistribute, but they were all getting along so well) and he crows all the time. The males in other pens are happy as long as they are the sole male among females.

Maybe he wants the females in the other pen too?

At least you don't have a mockingbird! That thing is singing 24/7 around here. Crossing my fingers it doesn't learn to crow.

I do actually have one with a gentle and soft crow. He used to be louder though, so maybe he's just content enough to not bother with extra volume.

Around here it's scrub jays. The things never shut up.

Ha! We have stellar jays, and some other bird that I don’t recognize that sings at night, but these crows were IMPRESSIVE. I’m talking windows-closed, could hear from 3rd floor on the side of my house farthest from the yard.

Vent checked the tux I wasn’t sure on and it’s definitely also a boy. RIP little guys, the shears are here. Now I just need to figure out how to convince my toddler she doesn’t need to follow me around for a bit. :tongue

Our first verified roo was loud and persistent. I thought the kids (teens) would be upset when I culled it but my son's first response was "What took you so long?"

Ha, my toddler was ok after I promised I was going to make sure it didn’t hurt them & that we wouldn’t process the ones she and her sister had named, for which I am grateful.

She asked if they would be “alive in her tummy” and was relieved to know that wasn’t going to happen either. :lau

One down, two to go... man, the worst part was the bit where it kept moving after being very, VERY dead. /shudder

I volunteered my partner to take care of the next one. :p Whoever is least grossed out gets to do the last guy. I have a bad feeling it’s gonna be me, lol.
