I know this is a forum for chickens, and I have backyard chickens, but I was curious if anyone out there would have any experience with raising quail. I was reading an article the other night in Hobby Farms magazine about raising fowl other than chickens. I was toying with the idea of raising some quail after reading that article. Any one know of pros and cons with them? Thanks for your input!!

Hi,

There is a whole section devoted to quail, it's under 'other backyard poultry.' I am raising coturnix right now, and they are pretty easy to raise for meat. They are easy and quick to hatch, grow to butcher age in six weeks, and do well in small spaces. The downside is that they are small, so you need to raise more of them to feed the same amount of people as a chicken. But I think they are worth it.

Good luck!

Well we just got 48 quail eggs and 26 of them hatched and 12 more coming. Here are some pictures.

I don't know much about quails but i do know there adorable and have a really good hatching rate. They need lots of care and atention and also they can fall from 3 feet and not die or get really hurt. LoL!!!

Are they king quail or yapanese quail

I have one of each they are so cute and friendly but they are hard to breed I tryed and tryed and I only got one baby which before I could move it out of the cage it was killed by the male yapanese quail:/. And the male was a bully he killed own of the female by being to ruff with her ( he was trying to mate with he he didn't want to but! ).

One would have to invest in very secure housing if one has any hope of a harvest. Free ranging is definately out of the question as they will make haste N S E & W pronto !
