The best chance you have of getting any fertile eggs from your coturnix male quail is to use coturnix females.

Best buy 6-8 hens to run with your male birds.

Why??? the button is about half the size and I don't even know if they would do it? I mean sparrows don't mate with finches so why would a coturnix mate with a button?

Why on earth would you do that? Honestly, I think you shouldn't try to hybridize birds. If you actually want chicks, then match your species. Female Coturnix with your males are really your best bet. Besides, Coturnix are huge compared to little Buttons. To be honest, I think the Button would be killed being mated by such a large roo... I used to have quail (not Coturnix) and they did not go broody. Ever. You really should consider getting (or building) an incubator, otherwise your chances of getting chicks is very small.

Ok, everyone is trying to tell you nicely what to do. But because I read your post and I'm not a nice person and obviously your somewhat clueless, an idiot, or both, I will give you an answer because your questions state that you obviously you arent getting the point.

An alligator cant breed a dog... They are two different species... If you want to get babies you HAVE to get a female bird of the same species to go with a male of the same species. A male coturnix breeds a female coturnix to make fertile eggs.

Coturnix quail will be your best bet to get to breed quickly and get fertile eggs. You will HAVE TO GET AN INCUBATOR!!! ANY DOMESTIC QUAIL WILL NOT BROOD EGGS!!!! THEY JUST WONT!! DONT BET ON IT, GET OVER YOUR IDEA AND UNDERSTAND IT WONT HAPPEN. THE BROODY "KNOWHOW" HAS BEEN BREED OUT OF THEM OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS..

DO NOT KEEP DIFFERENT SPECIES OF QUAIL TOGETHER IN THE SAME PEN. IT'S LIKE KEEPING THE ALLIGATOR AND THE DOG IN A PEN TOGETHER!!! IT DOESNT WORK OUT, EVEN IF YOU THINK THEY ARE BOTH NICE.

Either decide if you want to breed coturnix quail, or bobwhite quail, or both BUT BREED AND KEEP ALIKE SPECIES TOGETHER ONLY.

You are not a scientist. You have no business trying to make a hybrid alligator dog and try to get eggs with fur.

It's simple really.... Don't come to a forum to ask dumb questions and waste peoples time trying to breed an alligator to a dog or an elephant to a cat. It does not take a genius to understand what everyone has told you already.

"I want to make my quail go broody and hatch their own eggs" - Well I want 500 million dollars to fall in my lap tomorrow while I sit on my couch.... Do you understand the stupidity your bringing to the table here yet?

After numberous people reply to your question to help you and educate you, dont keep going like your going to change evolution. Evolution as already taken it's place before you were born and the way it is is the way it is.

On that note, if you want to kill your birds by doing what you want, by all means kill them, they are yours to kill. But, remember in the end, if you have a serious question and would like to learn, there are a few people on the forum that can teach and educate you wether it be informing you of what to do nicely, or telling you bluntly to that you are wrong.

I posted this before, but it seems that this needs to be out there again. This link is a response to a question that one member posted about crossing a Scaled quail and a Bobwhite. This study was conducted by the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, and they had the money and resources to conduct it thoroughly. You'll notice that buttonquail is not listed in the hybrid study... and I'm sure everyone else knows why, but simply put, although it is called "buttonquail", it isn't really a quail... it is not even related to the other species of quail... not even in the same family.

Now, everyone else posted their opinion, and I agree with everything said. As a responsible quail owner, the very world they live in depends on us; from the cage they live in, giving them water and food daily, cleaning their cages... this even mean breeding. I can understand if there were some "scientific" reason for why you want to breed these quail, but breeding them just because you want to doesn't mean you should. Once your bobwhite reaches maturity and is ready to mate, it will kill any other quail species, so don't be surprised if one day some (or all) of your birds are dead.

If you want "lots of babies", please get a fish tank full of guppies.

Again, I really wish this would end the discussion about creating "hybrids", but somehow, I don't think it will.
